Appeal for Immediate Stop of the Chinese Military Interference in 
the Democratization of Taiwan


Taiwan has a strong will to realize democracy. The first free and 
direct presidential election will be held on March 23rd. This fact 
is regarded by the Chinese government as unendurable and 
threatening. China still tries to influence the development and 
the result of this election by making menacing declarations and 
holding grand military maneuvers along the Taiwan Straits since 
the latest six months. By this China intends to shatter and 
suppress the democratic development in Taiwan. All these seriously 
jeopardize democracy and in the meantime affront human rights.

Only the Taiwanese have the right to determine their own future. 
China should not be allowed to threaten democracy in Taiwan and 
decide the fate of the Taiwanese with her military superiority. 
Taiwan has never been governed by the Peoples Republic of China 
and possesses her own government. After the economic prosperity 
the Taiwanese have been making great efforts to establish 
democracy in which an enormous progress has been made. Each 
intimidation made by China in order to obstruct the 
self-determination of the Taiwanese about their future is 
unjustified and unwelcome.

The war brings nothing good. The war does only harm to the people 
of both sides. We stand up resolutely for the peace between Taiwan 
and China as well as in Asia. We strive for a peaceful 
coexistence. War and rivalry between both sides should be 
carefully avoided.

Therefore we request earnestly for your participation in this 
activity. YOUR SIGNATURES are called for, so that we can present 
them to the German Minister of Foreign Affairs along with a 
declaration which states our claim on March 20th. On the same day 
we will also deliver the Chinese Embassy our protest.
